Is Invisalign Teen Right for Me?

If your teen needs braces, you may be wondering, “Is Invisalign Teen right for me?” While an orthodontist is the only one that can tell you definitively, we can give you some necessary information. When you make an appointment with Clearsmiles Orthodontics, you will know what questions to ask.

What is Invisalign Teen?

Invisalign Teen is perfect for active teens. They are using the same quality Invisalign tray aligners as adult Invisalign. Invisalign Teen does what traditional metal braces do — correct alignment, under- and overbite, and help adult teeth settle in.

In a nutshell, Invisalign Teen is less noticeable, easier to wear, and more comfortable. The removable aligners are custom-fit for each teen, using 3D imaging technology. Because they are almost invisible, Invisalign Teen is great for self-esteem. Teens won’t be afraid to smile while wearing them!

Invisalign Teen works by applying gentle pressure on teeth, which gradually shifts them into the correct position. Every two weeks, a new set of trays is introduced as teeth continue to move. There is some minor discomfort when switching trays, but this is very mild in comparison to traditional braces.

Because of the effectiveness, treatment plans can sometimes be as short as six months, although the average treatment plan is 12 to 18 months, and sometimes longer.

Is Invisalign Teen Right for Me?

Now that you understand what Invisalign Teen is, you have a million other questions.

What if your teen loses an alignment tray? A new tray can be made because all the information is in the computer. However, if it is near a new tray change date, the orthodontist may recommend just moving into the next tray set early.

How many hours a day must aligners be worn? It is recommended that teens wear the aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours per day. Striving for 22 hours is optimal, of course.

What foods are on the forbidden list? Absolutely none! Because your teen will remove alignment trays for eating and drinking, there are no dietary restrictions during the treatment period. Brushing and flossing before reinserting trays after meals are required.

Is there a downside to Invisalign Teen? Your teen must wear the alignment trays daily for 20 to 22 hours, or treatment will be ineffective. Treatment requires a dedication to success and a commitment from your teen. Compliance is generally not a problem because the nearly invisible trays do not carry the same stigma as traditional braces.

As you think of more questions, be sure to jot them down so they will be handy when you have your consultation.
